I know things are a little scarce and maybe even a bit vague around these parts, but an explanation is coming soon.

I’ve been Chummed!

February 2nd, 2008

Stitch-Stirrers recently received a cool mention and write-up over at a news blog I hadn’t ever heard of before called Lime & Violet’s Daily Chum. It seems to be packed-full of fun information for both the knitter and crocheter. So if you’re like me and hadn’t ever heard of it, take a click on the link and head on over there.

Something else fun and crochet-related mentioned in the post is Crochet-along, which is an on-going along which occasionally changes themes, with the most current one being granny squares. It’s run primarily by planetjune, and earlier this year, I signed on to help out as an admin. If you haven’t trailed over that way, check it out. It’s no pressure crochet with few deadlines and lots of inspiration.

While you’re checking out other blogs, why not drop in on Dawn over at Crochet Compulsive? After all, she’s the one who did the write up about SS. Thanks, Dawn!

Busy Past Few Days

November 12th, 2007

Since the early part of last week, I’ve been a busy crafter, trying to get some things together for my first ever craft sale. I pulled half of my craft room out and placed it on the dining room table so I could see what I had to work with. I had a couple of creative ideas, such as the poinsettia hair clips, which I made with some sequin flowers I had, as well as a few seed beads. I thought they turned out really cute, and a few of them even sold. Poinsettia BarretteI also made some button wreaths, which didn’t go over too well, but I thought they were great. I ended up just giving them away, which is just as much fun as making a buck on something I made.

There were four of us who were in this craft fair thing together, so we came up with a nifty little name for ourselves. Using our initials, we decided on TLCJ, which stands for Tender Loving Crafting Junkies. (Crafting blog to come!) I’m the “T” of the group. The “J”, which is Jenn, wasn’t able to play along with us on Saturday because of an uncontrollable circumstance–we missed you, Jenn!–but the other three of us were excited to take part in this event. (Jenn was excited, too.) It was the first for each of us and between the three, we had enough items to fill our little area. L & C — Lissa & Carrie (L is the one who taught me to crochet & C is the one running the booth in the photo) – both knit as well as crochet, and they had some really cute hats, scarves, & purses they’d made randomly throughout the year. I was able to mix my few crocheted items in with all of theirs, so it all just kinda blended in. I Button Wreath 2think our display wasn’t too bad for beginners; we learned alot by just jumping in and doing this. Each of us made a little money & had fun doing it, so a good time was had by all.  We’re hoping to do this again in the near future, at least one more time, so J can join in. We’ve talked about having regular craft days–I always love it when we get together–so we can build up our stockpile of crafty items just to have for fairs or any occasion that may require a gift. And between the four of us, there’s always a lot of crafting going on.

At the fair, we met a couple of other crocheters, and there was one vendor who was an avid knitter. Her display was great, and she had a really cute Santa hat that I loved, but didn’t buy. I did get a cute hat from Lissa after the fair was over. I’ll have to take a pic and show it off sometime. There was also a woman there who was selling beautiful afghans at a very cheap price. When I stopped to talk to her, I found out that her 91-year-old mother had crocheted all of them, and they were just piling up, which is why she was selling them so inexpensively. Last I talked to her before the fair ended, only one blanket had sold. I was surprised. I had my eye on one, but we already have blankets and afghans all over the place, and like the woman who made those, they’ll eventually just collect all over the house, so I opted not to. I did buy my mom a gorgeous wooden angel for Christmas, though.

After crafting like a mad-woman all of last week, yesterday I just vegged. We ordered pizzas and watched the Chiefs play. (LJ may be out for the rest of the season…boo hoo.) I crocheted a little, napped a little, and was just a bit lazy. I thought I’d be in a crafting burnout, but actually, I have a new fun idea running through my head that I need to work on. I still have a couple of patterns I need to write up and get on the net. I know someone already wants to make my pocketed scarf. Just wait until you see the panta that goes with it. It’s a cute set.

Now I’m back to working on Christmas gifts. I so need to sit down & write out my list so I have a “visual” of all I hope to accomplish over the next month.

There’s so much to do, and just never enough time in the day.

Books & Crochet: Two of my favorite things.

September 25th, 2007

Books Talk:

Recently, I discovered the world of audio books. I always knew they existed, but every time I looked at the library, I couldn’t find a title that interested me. The other day, I stumbled across a book I’ve seen in Barnes & Noble and wanted to buy until I realized it was a story about vampires. I don’t do vampire novels; they’ve just never interested me. But since I could borrow the audio and not actually have to read it, I figured “why not”. The novel, Incubus Dreams (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Book 12), is the first book I’ve had read to me in a very long time…well, if you don’t include when Dan reads parts of his Zen or philosophy books out loud. And I can actually wash dishes, clean house, and even crochet while “reading” a book!

As for actually reading something, I started The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. It’s the story of a prostitute in London set back in the the Victorian era who wants to make a better life for herself. (Yes, I like dark, sexy novels, but not really romance.) So far, it’s interesting enough, and the way it’s written makes the reader feel like they’re actually part of it all.

Crochet Talk:

Now that I finished my first pair of crocheted socks, I decided to start a second. I like the idea of pedicure socks, although I don’t usually get pedicures, but I do like wearing my Crocs Athens flip-flops a lot, so I thought Deneen’s free pattern for Crocheted Pedicure Socks would be something worth trying with the intent of wearing my flops in cooler weather. So far, so good. I’m hoping to make at least two more pairs of these once I get past this first pair: one for my mom and one for my sister, both of whom get pedicures, even in the winter.

I also started a Christmas stocking for my daughter. She decided on purple with a white cuff, and the pattern I’m using came out of a book that I got at the Library’s Book Sale earlier this month. If hers goes well, I plan to make myself one with antique white and a rosy color, then make Dan one in the colors of his choice. I also want to make the new baby in the family one so I can say I made him his first Christmas stocking.

I’m working on my ad for the Stitch-Stirrers group, too. I have an idea laid out but I haven’t gotten it quite where I want it just yet. I also have a couple of pattern ideas dancing around in my head for the Fall Mission on the same site. I’m really hoping Stitch-Stirrers gets crochet some attention with others creating their own patterns and doing a bit of writing about the topic. We’ll see how it goes. I was really pleased with how the first prompt turned out.

Net News

July 7th, 2007

It’s really odd, and I’m not sure how it happened, but I just noticed that I have a Flickr pro account. That’s cool because that is the only way a person can get their photos into Ravelry. Speaking of Ravelry, if you haven’t signed up for an invitation to join, what are you waiting for?? It’s only the coolest site around for crocheters and knitters. And if you have signed up but haven’t received your invitation, don’t dispair. They aren’t leaving anyone out; they just have a lot of people who want to join and they’re doing their best to get everyone in. Be sure and read their posts on the opening page about all that’s going on in the world of Ravelry. Stay positive and don’t get dismayed–your time will come.

–Notice the way the first few lines of this post are? For some reason, WP is being wonky, and I can’t fix it.–

As for the new browser, Opera, that I downloaded on my computer: It works great, other than for a few bugs here and there that I’m trying to sort out as I can. For one, I can’t log on to Flickr using it because the page goes haywire and starts redownloading itself over and over again. Too, here in WordPress, it doesn’t wrap my words around automatically when I’m typing like it did before, unless I’m in “code” mode. I did, however, get my QuickTime problem figured out by downloading a alternative program that works just fine. It’s called “quicktimealt181lite”. I don’t remember where I found it, and right now, I don’t care as long as it works…and as long as it didn’t have a virus attached to it…LOL…er, um…hmm…Seriously, though, it does work in Opera, whereas QT did not.

I’ve been spending more and more time on-line since finding all of the programs I’m using now, especially in Ravelry. That site has actually encouraged me to crochet more, even when summer seems to be my downtime. I’m slowly but surely finishing my butterfly shawl, and I started a school spirit blanket for my daughter. Just a little something we can carry to the football games & band events, crocheted in her school colors.

I also finished two books recently, so look for reviews on those coming soon, as well as a crochet book I picked up a few weeks ago. I still have a couple of crochet-related items to blog. Sorting out all of my browser and QT problems has hindered me some–not to mention the time I’m spending in Ravelry!–but more posts are coming soon.

Busy

April 11th, 2007

I’ve been busy, mostly with home stuff and crocheting. I haven’t taken the time to update, but as I was looking at my other blog, I decided I wanted to try one here at WordPress instead. So I hit the “magic button” and now, I’m officially part of this site. I’m hoping to do better with my updates. I have several projects completed to show-n-tell, but I’m waiting for the sun to come out to take photos. All is well in my lil’ crochet world.
